OVERVIEW
Explore Colors the Fun Way
Toys can aid in child development and, even more importantly, allow kids to have fun! Colorlay is a creative toy that combines education and play seamlessly, teaching children the essential concept of color theory.

To develop this concept, I looked into the current market of toys, researched the topic of child development, and conducted live user testing.

Toys are a necessity for child development.

02. IDEATION

IDEATION
Concept Exploration
The project objective is to design a fun toy that teaches an important learning concept that is age-appropriate (difficulty, scale, etc.)
CONCEPT
Concept Selection
The Colorlay concept accomplishes the learning outcome as well as being open-ended in play. It also has the potential to grow with the child and provide a variety of activities.

03. DEVELOPMENT

DEVELOPMENT
Lightbox
One of the main components of the toy is the lightbox. I explored different features that would make the lightbox serve its purpose in a way that would be easy and intuitive.

Implementations:
- Shape drawer moved from the front-face to the sides so that it wouldn’t get in the way when opened.
- Paper clamp removed due to safety concern for fingers.
- Raised frames were added to create a border for the paper to sit in place.
- No edges on the side frames, allowing for pieces to slide into drawers.
- Slight cut-ins added to the screen cover to make paper removal easier.
DEVELOPMENT
Branding
When ideating the brand logo, I focused on incorporating defining aspects of the toy itself as well as trying to capture mood.
- Defining Aspects: primary shapes & colors
- Mood: loose, bright, fun

DEVELOPMENT
Templates
Using the simple shapes of the tiles, I constructed a variety of different images for the templates.

I tried to expand the images to include different categories (animals, objects, facial expressions, etc.) and levels of difficulty in order to give the templates room for growth.
